The Department of Health has established an accreditation process for off-the-shelf assessment tools that have been developed by independent bodies for national use in the overview assessment of older people's needs under the single assessment process (SAP) for older people. The process is led by an independent Accreditation Panel, which evaluates tools against a set of published criteria. The Accreditation Panel makes recommendations to Ministers, and the subsequent decisions are published on this website. By accrediting off-the-shelf assessment tools in this way, Primary Care Trusts, Care Trusts and councils with social services responsibilities can be confident that, if they opt to use such tools as part of their approach to single assessment, the tools are compliant with Department of Health guidance.
