In all cases that involve mesothelioma, 9 out of 10 cases can be attributed to asbestos. By breathing in fibers of asbestos, you are increasing the risk of getting the cancerous disease.

At first, the link between asbestos and mesothelioma cancer could not be made because of the long period of time that goes by from being exposed to asbestos to diagnosis of mesothelioma. But a study in South Africa during 1960 made the link between the two.

Many people come into contact with asbestos fiber through either their occupation and or living in at-risk areas. Examples of at-risk occupations and living areas are as following:

• Asbestos product manufacturing (insulation, roofing, building, materials)
• Automotive repair (brakes & clutches)
• Construction/contractors
• Maritime
• Miners
• Offshore rust removals
• Oil refineries
• Power plants
• Auto Mechanics
• Boiler makers
• Bricklayers
• Building Inspectors
• Carpenters
• Drywallers
• Electricians
• Floor Coverings
• Furnace Workers

This condition occurs in individuals who have been exposed to asbestos for a long period of time, especially in those who worked in factories, mines, shipyards and other industries using asbestos prior to 1970. Pleural mesothelioma is the most common form of this disease and develops in the lining of the lungs, causing shortness of breath, extreme swelling and sharp chest pain.
If the smoker is already suffering from asbestosis, the risk of developing mesothelioma increases by up to 84 percent.

Causes of Mesothelioma:
Working at an asbestos mine or asbestos processing plant.
Living in a residential area near an asbestos mine.
Working in a high-risk occupational setting such as the construction or automotive industry.
Renovating an asbestos-containing home without adequate safety measures.
Serving on military facilities or ships where asbestos was used in construction.

Best way to prevent mesothelioma is to take a proactive stance on your health and seek regular medical exams to check for signs of asbestos-related disease. If a previous job or project exposed you to asbestos, an experienced doctor can schedule the appropriate screenings to detect mesothelioma or another asbestos-related disease. Those with a history of asbestos exposure should not wait for symptoms to arise; monitoring development of asbestos-related disease offers the most opportunity for effective treatment.

Mesothelioma is a cancer that occurs in the mesothelium, a thin membrane encompassing the body’s internal organs and cavities. Mesothelioma is caused by asbestos exposure. Asbestos fibers that are inhaled through the mouth and nose may eventually become embedded in the lining of the lungs, causing harmful inflammation of the pleura and resulting in mesothelioma or asbestosis (scar tissue formation in the lungs). It has also been found that swallowing asbestos fibers could contribute to a form of the alignancyoriginating in the abdomen known as peritoneal mesothelioma.
