Fitness benefits for cancer patients are like those for the general population. Cancer survivors who exercise are fitter, stronger, and leaner. Exercise increases their fitness level, strengthens their muscles, and helps them lose weight. Not only that, but exercise can boost a patient’s self-confidence, elevate their mood, and reduce fatigue. It also reduces their risk of developing other health problems, such as heart disease and diabetes.
Exercise benefits cancer patients in any stage of the disease, even patients with advanced cancer and those for whom the prognosis is poor. For example, patients in the later stages of colon cancer or those with an unfavorable mesothelioma prognosis can benefit from stretching and flexibility exercises. Physical therapists can tailor exercise in a way that is safe for any person.
