Hello Community,

Many people confuse dental technicians with dental hygienists or assistants. While dental hygienists work with dentists to assist in the care of dental patients, dental technicians build teeth under dentist direction, but don't interact directly with patients. Dental technicians face numerous occupational hazards on the job, making good safety practices especially important in that workplace. One threat to dental technician safety is silica duct used in constructing artficial teeth. High amounts of silica dust can cause lung cancer if inhaled for prolonged periods, according to the Occupational Medicine Portal. The methyl metha crylate used to make dentured and platelets can be absorbed into the body, causing skin irritation and asthama. Chemical used in electroplating artificial teeth can create acid and alkaline mists that may have the same negative effects. Other chemicals, used to sterilize dental impressions and prosthetic devices, can contain harmful compounds that sometimes cause lung problems or dermatitis.
