Hello all,

Dental hygienists are licensed health care professionals who remove buildup of food from teeth and teach patients how to care for their teeth and gums. Dental hygienists regularly are at risk of contracting infectious blood-borne diseases such as hepatitis B virus (HBV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) because they routinely are exposed to patients' blood and saliva. Dental hygienists remove soft deposits called plaque as well as hardened plaque or calculus from teeth. Taking dental radiographs is a critical part of a dental hygienist's job; these X-ray images help dentists diagnose cavities and other oral conditions. As a result, dental hygienists are regularly exposed to radiation. Too much radiation can harm reproductive cells and other body tissues. Dental hygienists face a high risk of bodily injury as a result of strain and repetitive motion. Because dental hygienists sit for long periods while working on patients, they easily can injure their shoulders, backs and necks. They may develop carpal tunnel syndrome as a result of making repetitive and forceful motions with their hands and wrists.
