Kratom is an economical alternative to established opioid replacement therapies such as buprenorphine that are available from Internet pharmacies.12,13 Interestingly, the upsurge in mentions coincided with a 2005 U.S. National Drug Intelligence Center report describing potential applications for Kratom, including treatment of opioid withdrawal.11 The increased use of Kratom has led to its being listed as a drug of concern by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.
