Avoiding risk factors and increasing protective factors may lower your risk but it does not mean that you will not get cancer.
Different ways to prevent cancer are being studied, including:
1) Changing lifestyle or eating habits.
2) Avoiding things known to cause cancer.
3) Taking medicines to treat a precancerous condition or to keep cancer from starting.

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that has been used as an insulation material dating back to the early Greco-Roman eras. Industrial use of the mineral, however, is the culprit for the majority of exposures. While symptoms are similar, mesothelioma is not lung cancer and there is no known nexus between smoking and the development of mesothelioma.

Cigarette smoking causes lung cancer. In fact, smoking tobacco is the major risk factor for lung cancer. In the United States, about 90% of lung cancer deaths in men and almost 80% of lung cancer deaths in women are due to smoking. People who smoke are 10 to 20 times more likely to get lung cancer or die from lung cancer than people who do not smoke.
